“…and I said to my body, softly, ‘I want to be your friend.’ It took a long breath, and replied, ‘I have been waiting my whole life for this.'” — author unknown.
Have you been waiting too? Perhaps waiting for someone else to love you the way no one yet has, the way you long to be held and seen. Perhaps you have been waiting for a long time. And yet, no matter how well-intentioned they are, another human being simply cannot be everything you need. Nor can anything in this world that we look to or hope for or crave.
Why? I am coming to believe it’s because we weren’t given this life to search endlessly for a happiness that we are assured exists yet continually seems out of reach. We were made to live. We were made to know and create and breathe. We carry everything we need, in potential, in seed form. Now it just needs some warm, wet earth; some encouraging sunshine; and love. More than anything, love.
We seek, innocently or hopefully or desperately, for love in all the places we can’t reach. And ignore it in the only place we can. Maybe all those glimmering mirages we chase after are, in fact, reflections. Reflecting back the love we forgot we hold. Maybe we all live inside one-way glass, and all that we think is unattainable is just winking at us from behind our backs.
Be brave, face the mirror, and give yourself a smile, love. You’ve been waiting.
